    Homeless Awareness and Prevention Month
    Nov 1 - Nov 30
According to the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) under the Department of Education’s definition, there are an estimated 1.5 million children in the United States facing homelessness, and the number is increasing each year.

During the month of November, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, in collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, will be acknowledging National Homeless Awareness Month.

The intent of acknowledging National Homeless Awareness Month is to help ensure that students and school personnel become aware and sensitive to the needs of individuals in our schools and community, who are experiencing hunger and housing instability.

Students and staff participation in the activities planned for November, along with their active engagement in constructive discussions, will bring attention to the plight of individuals experiencing homelessness and will foster a greater understanding and solidarity to assist those impacted by unstable housing situations.

To show support for this awareness campaign, 18 Senior High Schools identified by their respective School Board Member will participate in a Homeless Awareness Day Rally at a local college campus on November 8, 2018. The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust will be in touch with the selected schools in order to coordinate the field trip.

Additionally, there is a Poster Contest for elementary and middle school students and an Essay Contest for high school students, being sponsored by the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust. The deadline to submit posters and essays for the contests is November 30, 2018. The winners of the contest will receive $175 gift cards and the teacher/School UP-START Liaisons at the schools with winning entries will receive a $75 gift card per winning entry. Please click here for specific information about contests’ rules, submission directions, deadline, judging and prizes.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Debra Albo-Steiger, Community Outreach Director, Department of Title I Administration, Project UP-START at 305 995-7318.
